Expanded Training
Participate in off-site training or competitions organized by club members.
Or, work toward specific skill titles.
AKC Fit Dog
CVOC is an official AKC Fit Dog Club. The purpose is to promote health and fitness for dogs and their owners.
AKC FIT DOG clubs complete at least one of the following annually:
Conduct at least four group fitness walks per year, or
Conduct regularly scheduled canine fitness/conditioning classes.
In fitness walks and classes, dogs and owners may participate at their own individual skill level.
AKC Rally
Several of the CVOC member actively complete in AKC Rally competitions.
Think of an AKC Rally event as a team sport: you and your dog navigate a course side-by-side as you guide your dog through 10–20 signs. Each sign gives instructions for the next skill to perform. Teams move continuously with the dog under control at the handler’s left side, demonstrating teamwork both during and between the numbered signs. While each run is timed, the focus isn’t speed—it’s teamwork, accuracy, and a dog that remains under control throughout the course.
AKC Agility
AKC agility is a fast-paced, competitive dog sport where handlers direct their dogs through a numbered, preset obstacle course—including tunnels, weaves, and jumps—within a set time. It tests team communication and speed, with dogs navigating 14–20 obstacles off-leash, relying solely on handler body language and cues.
AKC Obedience
AKC obedience is a competitive dog sport focusing on precision, teamwork, and reliability, where dog-handler teams execute specific exercises—such as heeling, jumping, and retrieving—judged against a "perfect" standard. It emphasizes training for good companionship in public and at home, open to all breeds, with titles earned in Novice, Open, and Utility classes.
AKC Trick Dog
AKC Trick Dog is one of AKC’s most popular training programs because trick training is fun for both dogs and their trainers. Tricks are behaviors that are designed to entertain others. AKC Trick Dog ranges from very simple novice tricks such as teaching your dog to get in a box on cue, to complex tricks that are several behaviors chained together in one exciting sequence.
AKC Coursing Events
AKC coursing events consist of three main types of lure coursing sports: Lure Coursing, the Coursing Ability Test (CAT), and Fast CAT. These events simulate the chase of live prey using a mechanized white plastic lure that dogs follow across a field.
Carolina Training Center
Some members enjoy a day at the Carolina Training Center in the dock diving pool, or they take a Scentwork or Tracking class.
Therapy Dog Skills
Therapy Dog Skills training focuses on the skills a therapy dog candidate needs to work politely and confidently in real-world settings. Therapy dogs should be comfortable around medical equipment (such as walkers and wheelchairs) and around patients who may move differently or make unexpected noises. Building and practicing these skills can help teams prepare for evaluation with a therapy dog organization.

Do More With Your Dog
