Class Overview:
The Therapy Dog Skills class is designed for dogs and owners who want a dog that behaves calmly and confidently with their handler in a variety of real-world settings. Dogs practice foundational skills such as walking on a loose lead, sitting or lying down and staying in position for several minutes, and coming when called in a controlled situation. Dogs also work on remaining steady when unexpected noises occur.
These skills are important for therapy dog candidates. Therapy dogs must be comfortable working around medical equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs, and around people who may move differently or make unusual noises. The skills practiced in this class can be used to prepare for evaluation and participation with a therapy dog organization.
NOTE: This is not a training class. Dogs should know basic obedience before taking this class.
