About Our Instructors
/ Evaluators

Shirley McGillen - Shirley is a retired teacher and has been a member of CVOC for almost 16 years. She and her male German Shepherd dog worked together to earn a Novice Level Companion Dog title. Her husband, Wayne, worked with their female German Shephard dog for the Novice Level Companion Dog title as well.

Suzanne Hefner - Suzanne's experience with training dogs is extensive. Her interests lie in obedience training. She is an AKC Canine Good Citizen™ Evaluator. She has shown dogs in breed, obedience competition and lure coursing, and continues to attend seminars and workshops for continuing education. Her experience includes past obedience chairperson for the Greater Hickory Kennel Club (GHKC) AKC obedience trials. Suzanne believes in the positive, motivational training methods taught by Dr. Ian Dunbar, Pat Miller and Karen Pryor. She has been a CVOC instructor for their Beginner Obedience classes and is currently the club's test evaluator for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test as well as the evaluator for the AKC Tricks test and ATT. She is a member in good standing of CVOC, GHKC, and the Basenji Club of America (BCOA).

Tracy Cooper - Tracy, a member of CVOC since 2017, started training classes with her family dog to gain confidence and understanding of her dog’s behavior. She is an AKC Canine Good Citizen test Evaluator. She has worked closely with her dog through numerous levels of training, and has learned that when you learn what motivates your dog, reward reinforces the desired behavior. This is how dogs learn best. Tracy is looking forward to passing on what she has learned to class students.

Barbara Busch - Barbara has owned a series of Rhodesian Ridgebacks as well as a Pembroke Welch Corgi, Border Terrier and Labrador Retriever. She has trained and competed with these dogs in Obedience, Rally, Tracking, Trick Dog and Agility. All have had Canine Good Citizen certificates and several were/are working Therapy Dogs. She especially likes Rally training because you can encourage the dog while training and even in competition.
